Physiotherapy, or physical therapy, is a defined by the chartered society of physiotherapy as a health care profession that “helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability”. The aim of physiotherapy is to facilitate recovery through development, restoration and maintenance of movement and physical function of people affected by injury and illness. Physiotherapy additionally aims to promote good holistic health and prevention of further injury to allow for improvement of quality of life. Physiotherapists are qualified to assess and treat a variety of health conditions. These include:
Orthopaedics
This is related to the treatment of the musculoskeletal system. This includes joints, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Physiotherapy intervention can be implemented for fractures, soft tissue strains and sprains and joint replacements to name a few.
Sports
This is the treatment of all sports related injuries and prevention of further injuries. Physiotherapy intervention includes treatment of muscle strains and sport specific rehabilitation, strength, and conditioning.
Cardiopulmonary
This is related to the treatment of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. These include the lungs and heart. Physiotherapy interventions include treatment of asthma, pneumonia, and post-bypass rehabilitation to name a few.
Neurology
This is related to the treatment of the nervous and neuromuscular systems, including the brain and spinal cord. Physiotherapy treatments include post stroke rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation and others.
Geriatrics
This is related to the treatment of older populations including prevention and rehabilitation of diseases and injury prevalent in older persons. Physiotherapy interventions can be implemented for balance problems, pain management and general physical health maintenance.
Paediatrics
This is related to the treatment of children including developmental delays and physical dysfunctions. Physiotherapy interventions include treatment of Cerebral Palsy, gross motor delays and others.
Pelvic health
This is related to the treatment of the pelvis and pelvic musculature in both men and women. Physiotherapy interventions can assist with urinary incontinence, urinary retention, pelvic floor prolapse and others.
Pain Management
This is related to the treatment of pain, both acute and chronic in the body systems. Physiotherapy treatments include management and rehabilitation of neck and back pain, joint and muscle pain.
