Dental Hygiene

A Dental or Oral Hygienist is a licensed dental professional that focus on the prevention of oral disease and the maintenance of good oral hygiene. Oral hygienists are primary healthcare professionals who often work alongside dentists and other dental professionals to provide full oral health care, but the Oral Hygienists at the Durban North Smile Center have completed an advanced course accredited with OHASA (Oral Hygiene Association of South Africa) that qualifies them to practice individually.

This allows the Dental / Oral Hygienists to provide Oral Health Care for a multitude of conditions both preventative and corrective such as:

  • Oral Health examination, assessment and instruction which includes preventative and educational services
  • Tailored treatment plans that emphasize the importance of behavioural changes
  • Teeth Cleaning – Scaling and Polishing and Oral Hygiene Motivation
  • Deep Scaling and Root Planing
  • Fluoride Treatment
  • Bad Breath
  • Custom made sports and mouth gum guards
  • Treatment of teeth sensitivity
  • Teeth Whitening
  • Family oral health care
  • Fissure Sealants
  • Fully licensed to administer local anaesthesia
  • Dental Radiography

The Oral Hygienists at the Durban North Smile Center work with the contribution of an interdisciplinary approach, pooling resources from the allied services at the Center, aiming to provide optimum oral health care to their patients.
